Name: Elizabeth Atterberry
Title/Role in education: Preservice K-8. I will be student teaching 4th grade.
Grade: 4th
Subject: Generalist
Location: Seattle, WA
PBL Experience: Tenderfoot
Extra Credit: The PBL video reinforced my initial impression of project based learning as effective and exciting. I like PBL's emphasis on relevance (student questions as foundational) and the opportunity PBL provides for delving deeply into a topic. Although I have had no exposure to PBL in a classroom setting, I have studied PBL style approaches (such as utilizing the discovery methods of the discipline being studied) in my current class about human growth and learning. PBL seems to really jibe with the beliefs I am forming about how kids learn. Plus, though it may be a lot of work, it also looks like a lot of fun and I know I'll be able to discover new things along with and from the kids.

Hi Elizabeth,
Nice to hear your reflections as you dive into PBL. When I work with teachers who are new to this approach, I remind them that they've had lots of experiences with projects already--in their own lives. Real life is full of projects: planning a vacation or wedding, moving/remodeling, organizing a family reunion or community event, etc. And as with real life, PBL works best when you put time into planning and anticipating what's ahead. Then, once the project launches, you'll be prepared to make the most of it.
Here's a fourth-grade classroom that's all project based: http://www.smithclass.org/proj/projects.htm
Might give you some ideas. Have fun exploring!
