Name: Christine Pence

Title:  Lecturer, Consultant

Grade: Higher Ed

Subject: International Entrepreneurship/Strategy

Location: Riverside, CA

PBL Experience: Scout

I am looking for a middle/high school project in which to participate.  Please see my information in: http://www.edutopia.org/groups/pblcamp/people-seeking-projects

A couple of university level projects that might be adaptable and relevant for the K-12 environment: http://www.carolinaphotojournalism.org/economy/index.php and http://unc.news21.com/

Take a look, also, at the Webby Award candidates from this and past years for more ideas: http://www.webbyawards.com/webbys/current.php?season=14

This slideset is a brief example of how PBL can be integrated into a short lecture-based class using the Gulf oil spill.  In this case, marketing/advertising students were looking at the Integrated Marketing Communication Plan as a theoretical process and were to identify the medium through which marketing message might reach the ultimate consumer when time is of the essence and a startup company has limited resources and marketplace experience.  The use of word of mouth/buzz/viral/guerrilla/experiential/consumer-generated media all played a role in how Ocean Therapy Solutions eventually succeeded in selling its oil separator/centrifuge systems to BP.  Students participated in the lecture by adding information from real-time internet search and then completed the short assignment in teams.  They presented their conclusions in an active seminar format, discussing with each other their reasons, ideas and conclusions.

Hi Christine,
Welcome to PBL Camp! Hope we can take advantage of your PBL expertise to mentor some of the newcomers in this group.

I am delighted to participate and assist. I am certain I will learn things as well from this experience. K-12 is such an exciting environment for bringing change. Teachers are full of enthusiasm and really make a difference in their students' lives.

Hey Christine, Are you going to collaborate with Higher Ed or would you consider working with 3-5 and including cllege kids as volunteer mentors in a cross grade teaching project?

I would be delighted to work with younger ages and use college kids as mentors. What do you have in mind?
